Tuesday Tips - Binding

Questions about binding? What size?
Here's a great tip!
One size doesn't always fit all quilts. Thickness of quilts vary depending on thickness of batting. Make different size sample bindings. This is a good way to know you will use just the right size for your quilt.
Also, for a near perfect mitered corner take your stitch at a 45 degree angle straight to the corner. Brilliant! :)

One thing I've wondered... if you use a larger binding, do you sew more than a 1/4 inch from the edge of the quilt when you sew it to the front?

Hi Becky. Good question. It depends on whether or not you're hand stitching your binding or using your sewing machine to finish the binding. If hand stitching it doesn't matter. It just depends on how wide you want you're binding to be on the front. But, if sewing machine binding you'll want the same width on front as in the back. Basically just fold it in half around the edge of quilt so you can catch the edge of the binding as you're stitching. Hope that makes sense.

I used to use 2-1/4" bindings and stitch at 1/4" from the edge of the quilt, then I would trim 1/8" beyond the edge in order to have enough batting to 'fill' the binding. That's important for quilts that are being entered in a show. More frequently now, again depending on the thickness of the batting, I use 2" binding and trim at the 1/4" - that works very well. Obviously I don't trim a quilt before applying the binding. I like the tip of sewing off at the corner on a 45 degree slant - that makes it so much easier.
