...also be sure to check out my post on Wednesday.  It will be the start of the "Curve It Up with the QCR" QAL!  It's going to be lot's of fun!

Today I picked my favorite traditional block, the Churn Dash Block.

Fabric Requirements:

(2) 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" focus fabric
(2) 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" background fabric
(4) 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" focus fabric
(4) 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" background fabric
(1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" background fabric

For the 1/2 square triangles:  Take the (2) 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" focus fabric and face it down on top of the (2) 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" background fabric.  Using a ruler, mark a line from one corner to the other.

Stitch a 1/4" seam on each side of the marked line.

Cut in half on the marked line and press towards focus fabric.  You will end up with (4) 1/2 square triangles.

Square up 1/2 square triangles to a 4" square.  Line ruler on top, cut right and top side.

Flip fabric, lining up the two cut edges under the ruler on the 4" marks.  Cut other two sides.  You will end up with (4) 4", 1/2 square triangles.

Sew the (4) 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" focus fabric to the (4) 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" background fabric.  Make sure to sew on the 2 1/2" sides and press towards the focus fabric.  Make (4) sets.

Layout sewed pieces as shown above.  Sew a row at a time.

Sew rows together.  You may want to pin your intersections.

You will end up with a 9 1/2" Churn Dash Block.

Happy Sewing!

~Jenny~

I've made a churn dash quilt out of 12" blocks. I think I prefer your smaller block - and I love how you switched up the colours in it. It's such an easy block and sews up fast. I have a baby quilt to make for a little guy born just yesterday, and I think I'll use this little churn dash. Thanks!

let's just start by my admission I am an HST nut-burger! So, I thought I would pass along my fav HST tool: it the the Fons & Porter 1/4" seam marker, http://www.shopfonsandporter.com/product/Fons-and-Porter-Quarter-Inch-Seam-Marker/fabric-and-notions
I just love it because it draws my STITCHING lines and I love the simplicity of the 2 lines...!
