I'm excited to share this quilt with you today! Lee from Freshly Pieced designed this amazing quilt called "Sparkler" and the pattern is now available in the Spring 2013 issue of Fons & Porter's Easy Quilts.
I quilted this up for Lee a while ago. She gave me permission to do whatever I wanted for the quilting. (I love that!!)
I have to admit, the quilting design didn't come to me right away. I did know I wanted movement and knew I needed to add some curves to accomplish that. I used a circle and curved template to create the spinning in the white area's. I then added some fun fillers.
....and to not distract from the design in the white area's I kept the quilting very simple for the colored area's.
I used two layers of warm and white batting, which really helps show the quilting and give texture to the quilt. I also love using warm and white batting anytime there is white fabric in the piecing, it really makes the white POP and stand out! I changed my thread color in the colored areas to match the fabric and used an off white thread in all the white area's. I used "Sew Fine" by Superior.
I love this pattern! Lee did a fantastic job coming up with a design that is so dramatic but so simple to piece! It was a pleasure quilting this up for someone so talented. Her piecing was phenomenal....LOVE THAT!
...oh and I just had to take a picture of the back too!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Jenny! It looks fabulous! I love how you take simple designs and use them in a way that puts a quilt over the top! I find that I way overthink things sometimes, and you inspire me to look at quilting in a whole new way. I love the quilt pattern, too!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great quilt! Once again, your quilting rocks it!

ReplyDeleteFabulous quilting!
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you quilted the top. It looks like on the top you match thread color to fabric. When you do that what do you do with your bobbin thread? Do you have a go to thread color for your bobbins when you are doing color changes on the top or do you switch bobbin threads to match top thread color choices?
