Here is an update on Helen's blocks… She is using Anna Maria Horner's fabrics Folk Song.
Here is a pressing seam suggestion for managing the bulk from multiple layers. Some seams are pressed open and some are pressed to the side. You should do whatever makes you happy :-)
(I usually do a combination of both to manage the bulk. Helen)
Now for the Giveaway! Today we are giving away this awesome cutting/pressing mat which works great when taking a class and need your own cutting/pressing station but you don't have a lot of room. And our Curve It Up pattern which has 12 traditional blocks which we added curves to or used the Quick Curve Ruler to create the curves in the traditional block.

I used to have a killer recipe for pasta salad that I just loved. It seems to have become lost and now I'm trying to recreate it from memory - every batch has turned out a bit differently so far, and none of them are as good as the original! Argh!

ReplyDeleteI love to make my famous green salad. At least that's what everyone calls it. 1 can crushed pineapple, 2 cups of Mini Marshmallows, 1 box of pistachio instant pudding mix, Mix that all up and then add a tub of Cool Whip. Chill for at least 1/2 hour. This makes up in about 5 min. and everyone loves it.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite summer salad is pasta salad. It's so simple, but the main ingredient must be FRESH tomatoes from the garden.
ReplyDeleteCut up tomatoes and green peppers. One box of cooked pasta (your choice), fat free Italian dressing (most of the time I use half of a bottle), and Kraft Parmesan cheese. Put in a bowl with a tight fitting lid. Make and let sit in the fridge. Shake to re-distribute dressing before serving. YUM!

ReplyDeleteI love Glorified Rice. It has pudding, grapes, mandarin oranges, marshmallows, nuts, maraschino cherries, and cooked rice. It's been my signature dish for years. I even have a special bowl that I serve it in.

ReplyDeleteOh, thanks for including us all in the fun! A nice cold pasta salad seems just right on a hot day. I prefer a vinaigrette dressing, and maybe some feta cheese and cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and olives. Or tuna and celery and cucumber with a lemon juice vinaigrette.

I am adding edamame to all kinds of salads right now. It adds a great taste, good fiber and a texture that I like.
ReplyDeleteI love to make congealed salads in the summer months. I use 1 small box orange jello, grated carrots, can of pineapple drained, keep juice and add to make 1 cup..dissolve jello in 1 cup boiling water..1 tbsp vinegar, and half tsp salt. Goes great with chicken salad . Love your site, bought the pattern last week for this great pattern. Keep inspiring us with your wonderful curved patterns!

We make awesome big salads and add hard boiled egg and chicken (white meat bought bulk from Costco's rotisserie chickens) to make them a complete meal. Ours tonight had romaine, spinach, carrots, pea pods, cherry tomatoes, red pepper, onion, cucumber, diced apple plus the egg and chicken. I top mine with blue cheese, my hubby likes shredded cheddar. I love Newman's Own Raspberry Walnut vinaigrette dressing. At least half the veggies are grown in our own garden. Nothing beats a fully ripe cherry tomato picked fresh, especially the orange Sun Gold variety. We make it big enough that it lasts two days.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy a garden salad in summer and use a variety to present it, such as a wedge made into a BLT flavor version or grill peaches or plums for a little zing with a grilled chicken garden salad. Recently started using a blob of hummus and slicing coins of radish into a make shift rose as a small side dish. All easy and quick but healthy. Thanks for the wonderful and generous giveaway.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the helpful hints for this block. I have a recipe called summer coleslaw. You use a bag of shredded cabbage, finely chopped green onion, sunflower seeds, slivered almonds, crumble noodles from 1 pkg of beef flavored raman. You then make a dressing for it using the beef flavoring. No mayo to spoil in the summer heat with this recipe.

ReplyDeleteI have fallen for cilantro potato salad this summer. Although mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, and basil with good balsamic vinegar is a classic favorite in my house when our tomatoes come in. My hubby will be on a trip next week so I am excited to catch up on this Quilt Along. Look for photos soon!

ReplyDeleteI love to make a red potato salad, it's easy and delicious! 2 lb red potatoes, (cooked and cut in large chunks), 1/3 C roasted red peppers, 1 C ceasar salad dressing, 1/4 C grated parmesan, chopped flat leaf parsley. Mix and chill.

At my favorite salad you need: 0.5 kg of cooked fava beans, 3-, 4 boiled eggs, 2 large tomatoes, 2 large heaped tablespoons chopped dill, 2 large tablespoons of mayonnaise mixed with 2 tablespoons sour cream or yogurt - as you like, salt and pepper to taste. Broad beans with husks peel after cooking, eggs very finely chop, chop the tomatoes. Mix everything together with mayonnaise sauce and cream, dill and season to taste with salt and pepper. Delicious for supper!

ReplyDeleteOh, easy! Confetti Salad! Everyone clamors for this cold pasta salad in the summer:
ReplyDelete1 pkg. spaghettini (thin spaghetti)
6 oz. Wish Bone Italian salad dressing
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 dash cayenne pepper
1 Tbsp. poppy seeds
1 tsp. celery seeds
½ tsp. caraway seeds
1/3 cup juice of sweet pickles
1 cup finely chopped celery with celery leaves
½ cup finely chopped green onions
Cook spaghettini al dente. Drain well. Put in large bowl and coat with salad dressing. Mix remaining seasonings together, and add to pasta. Mix well. One hour prior to serving, add chopped celery and onions. Toss and serve.

ReplyDeleteI like to drizzle a bit of olive oil in a skillet and saute a mix of whatever fresh vegetables I have -- often it's zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes, carrots, mushrooms. Sprinkle with basil and grated parmesan if you like. Great with grilled chicken or fish.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite salad is tabouli. To make it fast I get tabouli mix (bulgur and spices) at the grocery story and just add the tomatoes, fresh parsley, olive oil, and lemon juice. I love your curvy patterns. Thanks for the fun!

From the Wegman's recipe archive -- combine blueberries with sliced cucumbers, sprinkle with feta cheese and mint. Dressing is white basalmic vinaigrette. Everyone in the extended family likes it -- and it is so simple to throw together!!!

ReplyDeleteGreat colors in these blocks - I love them! For a summer side dish or appetizer, I love making Caprese and it's so simple. Just place a slice of fresh mozarella, top with a slice of fresh tomato, top that with a basil leaf. You can secure this 'sandwich' with a toothpick if desired. Once all are assembled, drizzle with a reduction of balsamic vinegar. SO good!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite summer salad is freshly grilled chicken cut into strips and added to a bed of salad greens, along with any other veggies in the fridge. Sometimes I BBQ the chicken or marinate it, but it's always so good with other garden fresh veggies!

I wish it was me that would be selected but I will keep on hoping and dreaming. I noted recently in a magazine at home where I can get the quick curve ruler and then I could play. Thinking it just might fit my very meagre budget this fortnight to purchase it so I could play with some stunning Jinny Beyer Fabric that I have in my stash. When it gets done I will send a photo! ReplyDeleteI love the Mexican Macaroni Salad. I contains the normal ingredients but it also has roasted corn, salsa, cream cheese. It is wonderful. I make it a couple days ahead of time and allow the ingredient to be absorbed into the pasta.

ReplyDeleteFor a hot summer day I have a recipe for a cold tuna salad with macaroni noodles,mayo,mustard etc, the nice thing about this salad is after you have the base of it done you can add different things such as peas, onion,celery, cucumber slices etc to make it taste however you wish. It really is very very good and the more chilled it is the better it tastes.
