Easy Orange Rolls ~ Black Licorice Caramels

Orange Rolls remind me of the Christmas Season.  I grew up in Mesa, Arizona where my Uncle owns a Citrus Stand out in the Orange Groves.  We would go out there often to pick up fresh Citrus and if we were lucky they would have Fresh Orange Rolls.

My sister Helen came across this Easy Orange Roll recipe that is so good and just like the Orange Rolls I use to get in Arizona.  I've been making them every winter for years now and want to share it's yummy goodness with you all!

 Easy Orange Roll Recipe

1 bag of frozen Rhodes Rolls (3 lb bag)
zest of 1 orange
1 cube of butter (melted)
2 cups of sugar

Frosting:
2 cups of powdered sugar
4 T. melted butter
6 T. concentrated frozen orange juice (thawed)
milk for thinning the frosting

Directions:
Thaw frozen rolls (I just leave them in the bag).

Melt butter and combine in a bowl with the orange zest.  Taking a roll at a time...make a small rope and tie it in a knot (my kids like to help me with this part).  Dip it in the butter mixture then roll it in the sugar.  Place all rolls on pan and let rise till double.  Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Mix frosting ingredients with a hand blender.  Thin if needed with milk.  Spread on rolls after they are done baking.

Eat and enjoy!

I shared another recipe last year that is also my favorite for the Holidays, one I got from Helen also.

If you like black licorice or not...you will LOVE these caramels!!

Happy Holidays!

  4. oh, the santa plate does look like it could be a quilt pattern! :)

I had forgotten about these caramels - I had to get the anise oil at the food co-op last year, it was non-existent at any other store I checked. I did the microwave directions last year and it wasn't cooked quite long enough (too soft, but still tasted great!) - this year maybe I'll try the stove top version (I have a glasstop stove, so it's not too great for candy making!)

  5. Those rolls look great! I'll have to see what I can buy in our local stores to substitute for your brand. When you say "one cube of butter" ... what does that mean? 1/2 cup? 1 cup? 1 stick? Thanks!

  7. I sent my husband out with a shopping list that included Anise Oil. He came home with Anise extract. Have you ever used that and what is your opinion of using the extract? or should I just find the oil?

    Thanks,

  9. The internet is an amazing thing. I googled anise oil vs anise extract and found that I can use the extract but must multiple the amount of anise oil needed by four:)

I'll let you know how these turn out.

  10. I used the Anise extract - I just put in 3 tsp of extract in place of the oil. It worked! They are delicious!

One problem - my husband found black food coloring in liquid form - not paste. OMG! It comes sealed and well - when I pulled the seal off over the sink - I flipped it out of my hand and it sailed back onto ME and then all over the floor, cabinets, sink, counter and rug. BLACK everywhere! UGGGG! What a clean up! But the caramels are delicious. Thanks!
