To download pdf, click here.

Fabric Requirements:

Side curve blocks:
(4) 3" x 8 1/2" focus fabric
(4) 4 1/4" x 8 1/2" background fabric
Half Square Triangles:
(2) 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" focus fabric
(2) 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" background fabric
Center square in square block:
(1) 3" x 3" focus fabric
(2) 3" x 3" background fabric
(2) 3" x 8" background fabric

For side curve blocks:  Stack and center the 3" x 8 1/2" focus fabric under QCR so the left side of fabric sits under the 2 1/2" mark on ruler, make your cut.

 Discard fabric on left.

Stack and center the 4 1/4" x 8 1/2" background fabric under QCR so the right side of fabric sits under the 1" mark on ruler, make your cut.

 Discard fabric on right.

These are your curve shapes for your side blocks.

Before you start sewing, bottom fabric should extend an 1/8 - 1/4 inch past top fabric.  Sew and press toward focus fabric.  Repeat to make 4 blocks.

Square up block to a 8" x 4 3/4" rectangle.  Line up block under ruler with the focus fabric on left side and seams sit under the 2 1/4" marks on ruler (sample in red circles).  Cut along right and top sides of ruler.

Rotate block, lining up the two cut edges under the 8" and 4 3/4" marks on ruler.  Cut along right and top sides of ruler.

 Sample - squared up block

For half square triangles:  Take the (2) 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" focus fabric and place face down on top of the (2) 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" background fabric.  Draw a mark from one corner to the other.

Stitch a 1/4" seam on each side of the line.

Cut on marks, press open to make your 4 half square triangles.  If needed, square each one to a 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" square (depending on your 1/4 seam length).

 Sample - blocks squared up.

For center square in square block:  Layout pieces as shown above.  Sew the 3" x 3" focus fabric to the 3" x 3" background fabric (center row).  Then sew each side of center row to the 3" x 8" background fabric.

 Sample - center block.

Layout out blocks as shown above.  Sew to make two rows, one for top of Churn Dash and one for bottom of Churn Dash.
Layout out blocks as shown above.  Sew to make middle row of Churn Dash.

Layout out the 3 rows as shown above and assemble to make Churn Dash.

Looking forward to get the fabrics I've ordered, so I can get on with this first block. LOVE it! In the meantime I'll get to practice sewing curves :-)

So excited for this!

Love it! Does it matter how the middle is pressed? Or how the sides are pressed, when they are attached?

This is so awesome. I don't know if I can stand to sit on the sidelines. May just have to do it!

thank you *SO MUCH* for making the directions available as a PDF. I like to have written directions in front of me when I'm sewing something new; my computer is nowhere near my sewing machine so running back and forth between the computer and sewing machine would be highly inconvenient. Having the PDF right by my side for reference is a wonderful, wonderful asset!

I get an error when I click on the PDF link. It tells me the proxy server is refusing connection.
